In 1978, Jerry & Bev Van Elzen planted 2,200 apple trees, ranging from 18 varieties, to create Apple Valley Orchard. By 1984, the apple trees had matured enough for Jerry & Bev to open pick your own apples to the public. Additions such as a salesroom, cold storage, and a packaging room were created in 1987 to accomodate the orchard. However, the growth of Apple Valley didn't stop there. In 1998 a barn, housing a variety of animals, as well as walking trails were added in order to provide an environment for families to enjoy after an afternoon of picking apples. The newest addition came about in 2001, a bakery was built onto the salesroom. Along with apple picking and the walking trail, families can enjoy fresh baked pastries, cookies, and everyone's favorite caramel apples.
For the past several years part of the orchard has been renovated in order to make room for new varieties, those which have been sought after by all apple pickers. While the orchard does specialize in apples, we do have already picked pumpkins, corn stalks, a variety of gourds, corn cob bundles and straw bales all grown locally by the Van Elzen's. Today, there are over 3,000 apple bearing trees. Apple Valley Orchard, is still owned and operated by Jerry & Bev Van Elzen and their ever growing family. |
